Visual Art and Media Projects, circa 1960-2023

 Series — Multiple Containers

Scope and Contents

This series consists of materials related to Rosenthal’s visual and media-based projects including video works, photography, mail art, and textiles. The majority of materials span Rosenthal’s professional career as a working artist from the 1970s to the 2010s. As evidenced by the materials, Rosenthal pursued avant-garde projects such as surrealist photography and Super 8 short films, while also working as a photojournalist for major publications such as the New York Post and Village Voice. Also included in this series are personal and family textiles including clothing and accessories that were vital to Rosenthal’s artistic practice.

Artist Context

In a 2022 interview with Greg Stewart in White Hot Magazine, Rosenthal states, “one thing I can tell you is that I consider my photo-based imagery the 'real' art of my art, what I call the 'sacred objects' of art, and all the text-based work and video is a by-product of creating 'sacred objects.' By 'by-product' I mean the ideas that come about DURING the processes, particularly regarding the intersection of art and life, that lead to 'real art'.”
