Scope and Content

The Queens College Photo Archive documents the history of Queens College. The photographs of Queens College faculty, administration and students are from the 1930s to the present. Images of buildings and campus grounds date from when the campus held a parochial school in the 1930s to the 2000s, including several building construction and renovation projects including Klapper Hall, Benjamin Rosenthal Library, and the Music and Arts Building. The Commencement Office series is comprised of CDs and DVDs holding digital photographs of QC commencement ceremonies from 2002 to 2008. The Alumni Affairs material includes photographs of alumni and alumni events from 1989 to 2000 and contains photographs from 1984 to 1998 used in the alumni magazine Q Magazine.

Additional photos were donated in 2013 by Knight News student publication. They document student life from the 1960’s to 1980’s and many are featured in the newspaper. The archive also holds glass negatives and large scale negatives dating from 1930’s to the 1950’s in fragile condition which are in the process of being preserved and catalogued. In addition to these negatives, there is a large collection of 35mm negatives from Gene Luttenberg dating from the 1970s-1990’s.

Historical note

Queens College was established in 1937 and has been part of the City University of New York (CUNY) system since 1961. Before the college was created, the land was the site of the Parental Home for Boys, a home for delinquent boys. The original Spanish Style buildings were used for the new school. The College was established by Judge Charles Colden and lawyer Paul Klapper to meet the growing population needs of the Queens borough, with the location approved by Mayor LaGuardia. Over the years, Queens College has dramatically expanded the campus buildings and grounds. The demographics of the student population, much like the county itself, are constantly in flux. Photos taken over the years and captured in the archive reflect this evolution.

Abstract

The Queens College Photo Archive includes photographs, architectural drawings and posters documenting Queens College history. Prominent administrators such as QC’s first president Paul Klapper are highlights of the administrator portraits series. There are photographs of the college campus, faculty (primarily those who taught before 1970), library staff, and school events. The series of student life photos document a wide range of activities from political demonstrations, to parties, to academic events. Commencements and alumni events, including photographs used in alumni magazines, are also present. The oversized series includes posters for student groups and association events. There are also a large number of large format negatives relating to Jamaica Academy and 35mm negatives of campus events.
