The Joel Mandelbaum Manuscripts and Printed Music collection contains printed music scores, handwritten manuscripts, and ephemera relating to the tenure and creative process of Dr. Joel Mandelbaum throughout his 37 year tenure at the Aaron Copeland School of Music.

Biographical / Historical

Dr. Joel Mandelbaum was born in New York City, NY in 1932. He graduated from Harvard University with a bachelors in music in 1953, received an M.F.A in Musical Composition from Brandeis University in 1957, and a Ph.D. from Indiana University in 1961. Dr. Mandelbaum's dissertation topic, titled "Multiple Division of the Octave and the tonal resources of 19-tone Temperament", was the first Ph.D. dissertation on microtonality.

In his time as a professor at Queens College, Dr. Mandelbaum was Chairman of the Music Department from 1974-1978, Director of the Aaron Copland School of Music from 1981-84, and Chair of the Academic Senate (chief faculty officer) from 1997-99. Although he retired from his position in 1999, he retains the title of Professor Emeritus, and was still active as of 2021.

Abstract

The Joel Mandelbaum Manuscripts and Printed Music collection contains numerous printed and handwritten scores and manuscripts created by Joel Mandelbaum. Dr. Mandelbaum joined the Queens College faculty in 1961, serving as a professor of music for the Queens College Department of Music (later renamed the Aaron Copland School of Music in 1980) and retiring in 1999 after 37 years of service to the university.

Immediate Source of Acquisition

This collection was transfered from the Queens College Music Library to Special Collections and Archives in winter of 2011.

Processing Information

A number of Dr. Mandelbaum's scores and manuscripts were catalogued by the Queens College Music Library prior to transfer to Special Collections and Archives. These items were originally cataloged using the Dickinson classification system, and later re-cataloged using the Library of Congress classification sytem. Some items still have outdated call numbers listed on the physical item. Please refer to the identifier field in the finding aid and the book flags housed with the items for accurate call numbers.
