Abstract

The Joel Mandelbaum Manuscripts and Printed Music collection contains numerous printed and handwritten scores and manuscripts created by Joel Mandelbaum. Dr. Mandelbaum joined the Queens College faculty in 1961, serving as a professor of music for the Queens College Department of Music (later renamed the Aaron Copland School of Music in 1980) and retiring in 1999 after 37 years of service to the university.

The Vocal Works series consists of 11 printed music scores, some of which include poetry or interview notes by other authors such as May Sarton. Any annotations present in the scores are photocopied over from the originals.

The title reads "A Wind of Fall: Four Poems of Leonie Adams". Numbered pages on the bottom right are hand written. Annotations on the score are photocopied from handwritten original. Score includes part for a Soprano and a piano accompaniment.

The score contains four parts, each named after a poem of Leonie Adams': I. The Horn; II. Twilit Revelation; III. A Wind of Fall; IV. Twilight of the Wood.

The Ephemera series contains a number of materials that contextualize Joel Mandelbaum's contributions as a faculty member and musician during his nearly 40 year tenure at the Aaron Copeland School of Music. Two programs of the concert in honor of his retirement, a list of his catalogued works by the library, and his own catalogue as of June 2011 are among the series.
