The Past Is Now, 2004
Scope and Contents
Printed writing on the score reads "text by May Sarton. c-all rights reserved" and "Joel Mandelbaum 2004". Annotations and notes on the printed score are handwritten but photocopied from original. Handwritten "Song Cycle #13" on the front page, and "Settings of three poems from 'Coming into Eighty' by May Sarton" under the title. Score includes parts for a Soprano and a Piano throughout the sections.
Score is divided into three sections:
1. The Tides;
2. December Moon;
3. Rinsing the Eye.
Handwritten photocopied note at printed score states "*In measure 64, the decision as to whether to double the signer's final note or leave it unaccompanied is left to the decision of the singer with the proviso that the accent must be strong enough to complete the motive begun in the bass and orginially set to the text 'The Past Is Now'. -JM".
