Special Collections and Archives, 1969 - 2015

 Sub-Series — Multiple Containers

Scope and Contents

These files cover the development of Special Collections and Archives as a unit within the library. There are also two folders on the Louis Armstrong Archives, and a folder on the Rare Book Collection (also called the X collection). Materials document initial efforts to create a college archive in 1969-1970; a new round of proposals and advocacy for archives in the late 1980s and early 1990s; work undertaken by part-time archivist Steve Barto in the 1990s to early 2000s (including vacating historic collections from Kiely Hall and a records management project at Powdermaker Hall); and the development of the more modern Special Collections and Archives unit in the 2000s. Files from 2009-2012 document the birth of the Queens Memory Project and Civil Rights collecting initiative through press coverage and administrative files. Additionally, there are files on the relationship between the Library and Szilvia Tanenbaum/Pine Tree Foundation of New York regarding the creation of the Tanenbaum room 300i and other proposals. Finally, there are also papers related to the Historical Documents Collection (1960s-1990s), which was managed by Leo Hershkowitz of the History Department. All materials in box 9 and 22 except for Louis Armstrong Archive files which are in box 21.
