Biographical / Historical
"Homophile" is a term that was used in the 20th century (until 1969) to mean a person with the preference or attraction to a person of the same sex; it is used to emphasize love rather than sex for same sex. Many homophiles saw the word homosexual as a medicalized term emphasizing sex (Myers, 2013). Two of the most prominent homophile organizations included the Mattachine Society (advocating for gay men and lesbians) and the Daughters of Bilitis (primarily advocating for and catering to lesbians).
