Queens College Faculty and Staff Newsletters
Scope and Contents
The faculty and staff newsletter was published monthly for the majority of its existence, although there were also times where it was published weekly or quarterly, with some special editions also being published throughout Queens College history. The dates range from November 1940-December 2009.
From 1940-1958 these newsletters were titled Faculty/Staff Bulletins, from 1958-1985 they were the Faculty/Staff Newsletters, before becoming FYI with the subheading "Faculty Staff News" from 1985-2009.
Major issues covered in these newsletters include regular updates on faculty research, campus events, and current issues that impacted the school at large. The newsletters represent significant research value via internal College insight into the handling of important periods of American history, such as World War II, and highlights include communications from the College President, the New York City Mayor, and other civic leaders.
In the 1960s and 1970s the newsletters sometimes came with separate additions to the main newsletter, such as a calendar of events or "Newsletter Supplements". The Newsletter Supplements in 1970 were published by the Office of College Relations and Editorial Services.
Some editions are missing, notably including the first edition(s) of FYI in January 1985 and every edition from the year 2007. Other editions confirmed missing: March, September, and November 1965; April, September, and November 1966; March, April, May, and November 1967; early April 1985; February and March 1986; all of 2006 besides February, and January through August 2008.

Biographical / Historical
The College department responsible for the publication of the newsletter changed many times throughout its history. Prior to 1958 it is unclear which Queens College administrative department published the bulletins. The first credited publisher of the newsletter was the Office of College Relations, first noted in issues from 1958.
In 1980 the newsletters became a monthly publication. In January 1985 the Faculty/Staff Newsletters became FYI which was published bi-weekly, "usually on Thursdays" and was still published by College Relations.
In September 1993 the Office of College Relations became the Office of News and Information services. News and Information Services remained the publisher of FYI until April 2003, when the department that published FYI changed to Public Relations.
In September 2003 FYI announced that it would now be published monthly, and submissions should simply be sent to Maria Matteo. Maria Matteo and Public Relations remained the point of contact and publisher for the remainder of the faculty/staff newsletter's publication.
As of 2026, the current iteration of these newsletters is The QView, which is a "direct descendant" of FYI and was launched in 2017, although it is not internal-facing and is broadly addressed to the entire College commmunity.
