Scope and Contents

This sub-series contains prints and negatives documenting the architecture and community of the Kehila Kedosha Janina synagogue on the lower east side of New York City. It includes pictures of synagogue interiors and exteriors as well as events, including the bar mitzvah of Seth Kofinas in June 2007.

Biographical / Historical

The Kehila Kedosha Janina Synagogue, located on the Lower East Side of Manhattan, was founded by Romaniote immigrants from Ioannina as a congregation in 1906 and has existed at its current location since 1927. KKJ is both a museum and an active house of worship, with its historical importance recognized by the National and State Registers of Historic Places. It was also designated a New York City Landmark in 2004.

From the Collection: 8 Linear Feet (One record carton, two 5" x 8" boxes, five 8" x 10" boxes, three 10" x 13" boxes, one 10.5" x 12" box, and five 12" x 17.5" boxes.)
