Biographical / Historical
Dr. Joel Mandelbaum is Professor Emeritus in the Music Department of Queens College. He was born in New York City in 1932, and earned a bachelor's in music from Harvard University in 1953, an M.F.A. in Musical Composition from Brandeis University in 1957, and a Ph.D. from Indiana University in 1961. Mandelbaum's dissertation was the first Ph.D. dissertation on microtonality.
In his time as a professor at Queens College, Mandelbaum was Chairman of the Music Department from 1974 to 1978, Director of the Aaron Copland School of Music from 1981 to 1984, and Chair of the Academic Senate (chief faculty officer) from 1997 to 1999. He retired from his faculty position in 1999.
