Historical Note

According to Boris Schwarz, "Rathaus was one of the first serious composers to cultivate the comparatively new medium of sound film, for which his colorful, scintillating, and intense style was particularly well suited." Schwarz also notes that Rathaus's score to The Brothers Karamazov (1931) is considered a classic in the field. See Schwarz, Boris. “Karol Rathaus.” The Musical Quarterly, vol. 41, no. 4, 1955, p. 484.
