Printed by Franciscus Halma in Utrecht (The Netherlands). Title romanized from Greek. Traditionally ascribed to Longinus; real author unknown. Added engraved t.p., illustrated, with verso (p. [2]) blank. Printer's device on t.p. Greek and Latin text on opposite pages, with commentaries in Latin (p. [1]-257). French translation of On the sublime, with half title (p. [258]-344): Traité du sublime, ou Du merveilleux dans le discours. : Traite du grec de Longin / par Monsieur Despreaux. Index on p. [1]-[11] at end. Errata on p. [12] at end.

One of probably about 30 in the US, so moderately rare. Because this specific edition has an important place in the history of the text – it may be considered the first scholarly edition – the text is valuable for research

The thick covers appear original and are in decent condition; there is decoration along outfacing edges of both covers. The ridged back has been covered by a new green binding.
