5.1 Custodial History

The book was owned by William Holder, the Cambridge music theorist. We find his autograph on page 50 of Aristoxenus’ Elements. A later owner points this fact out in a short text glued on the first blank page. On the first page of the new binding there is a bookplate for George and Frances Turrell.

6.2 Existence and location of copies

One of rather few editions available in the US, WorldCat catalogues all original editions as 1977 facsimiles, which makes it hard to establish how many there may be. There is at least one at NYU. The Queens edition is doubly interesting because it was the property of a 17th century music theorist.

7.1 Notes

The (19th or early 20th century?) binding has a ridged back ornamented in gold with flower motifs and giving the text: Antiquae Musicae Auctores VII -------------- Meibomius At the bottom of the back is the text: Amst. 1652. The front and back covers have two parrallel lines in gold around the edges with tiny flowers in the corners. The binding is in good condition, but the back cover has come off and there is a tear in the back. There are marginal notes throughout the book, in at least 3 separate hands. One of the hands is the same as the writer of the short text glued onto the blank first page. 8.3 Archivist and Date: MdK and JGT, 2011-10-19; ZsS
