Abstract

The Alexander Kouguell Papers chronicle Alexander Kouguell's (1920-2022) personal life, career, and 68-year tenure at Queens College. The collection contains personal, performance, and academic records as well as photographic, audio, and music manuscripts. A noted cellist, Kouguell's papers detail his career as a performer, an educator, and provide researchers cultural snapshots of the greater New York area's orchestral scene throughout the 20th century.

One cassette tape. One side cotains Arthur and Alexander Kouguell's piano lesson (labelled Arthur and Dad); other side contains Alexander and Arkadie Kouguell's 2nd Sonata (labelled Alex and Dad). Labelled: "Ark. Kouguell - 2nd Cello Sonata; Arthur and Dad" on cassette case.

Arthur Kouguell is Alexander Kouguell's son and Arkadie Kouguell is Alexander Kouguell's father.

The Audio Recordings series consists of 11 cassettes and 2 magnetic tapes, including recordings of performances, rehearsals, compositions, and personal content. These recordings offer a deeper insight into Kouguell's musical career, collaborations with other Queens College musicians, and relationships with close family members.

Music Manuscripts, 1929 - 1982

The Music Manuscripts series include manuscripts written by Kouguell's father Arkadie Kouguell, Leo Kraft, and other composers, some of who dedicated their works to Kouguell. The manuscripts include Alexander Kouguell's notes and compositions that he wrote himself.

This series includes programs, flyers, ephemera, and schedules of the performances associated with Alexander Kouguell. Programs include Kouguell's performances as a member of the Bennington Chamber Soloists, the Musica Aeterna Orchestra, the Clarion Music Society of New York, the Silver Mine Quartet, and the New York Chamber Soloists. Many of the prorgams include performances of Arkadie Kouguell's compositions, as well as notes and additional program performers.

The Personal and Correspondence series includes correspondence between Kouguell and his parents, close friends, and the numerous accolades and awards that were awarded to him for years of service. These letters and certificates detail his parents lives, the lives of his wife and children, as well as his significant personal achievements.

Alexander Kouguell's parents' naturalization papers are included in this series.
