Scope and Contents
The collection consists of seventeen boxes of scrapbooks. These scrapbooks contain bulletins, newspaper clippings, pamphlets, and photographs, documenting the Seamen’s Church Institute and items related to maritime life and culture in New York City. Biographical / Historical
Created by unidentified staff at the Seamen’s Church Institute, the scrapbooks in this collection aim to serve the mission statement of the organization, which is to cares for the personal, professional, and spiritual needs of mariners around the world. The scrapbooks highlight the general issues surrounding seamen and more specifically those who were located in lower Manhattan. Newspaper clippings for the scrapbooks were acquired through Burrelle’s Press Clipping Bureau and the American Trade Press Clipping Bureau.
