Abstract

The Joel Mandelbaum Manuscripts and Printed Music collection contains numerous printed and handwritten scores and manuscripts created by Joel Mandelbaum. Dr. Mandelbaum joined the Queens College faculty in 1961, serving as a professor of music for the Queens College Department of Music (later renamed the Aaron Copland School of Music in 1980) and retiring in 1999 after 37 years of service to the university.

Johnnie Mae Walker Letter to Anne Koeppicus

Abstract

This letter, to Mississippi Freedom Summer Project volunteer Anne Koeppicus, is from her Mississippi host Johnnie Mae Walker, a field secretary for the Mississippi Freedom Democratic Party. The letter describes life in Mississippi during the summer of 1964. A newspaper article about Koeppicus, a photo of Koeppicus, a published autobiography of Walker, and transcript of the letter are also included.

Khaleel Anderson Oral History

Khaleel Anderson discusses growing up in Far Rockaway, Queens; sheltering at Queens College due to Hurricane Sandy in 2012; his time at Queens College as an undergraduate in the SEEK program and graduate student in Urban Affairs; and his political activism as a campus and community organizer. A few months after these interviews took place Anderson was elected to serve Assembly District 31 in Queens, becoming the youngest Black Assembly Member in New York State history.

Leo Kraft Papers

Abstract

Leo Kraft (1922 – 2014) was an American composer, educator, and author born in Brooklyn, New York. He taught music theory and composition at the Queens College School of Music, to later become the Aaron Copland School of Music, from 1948 to 1989. He was a key member in developing the music theory curriculum. Kraft composed many works of chamber music, and he also contributed orchestral, piano, vocal, and electronic music to his oeuvre.
