This series contains materials collected by Queens College and Library staff on Shaftel, as well as documentation of an exhibit on McCarthyism that took place in the Queens College Library in 2003.

Scope and Contents

Research materials - primarily photocopies of clippings from newspapers, Yearbooks, and magazines - collected by library and college staff on Oscar Shaftel. The bulk of the material was collected for the 50th Anniversary of Queens College in 1987. Includes original newsprint clipping of Shaftel's obituary from the New York Times.

Abstract The Oscar Shaftel papers contains correspondence, flyers, press clippings, memos, press releases, transcripts of testimony, and subject files documenting student activism at Queens College in the late 1940s and early 1950s and the effect of McCarthyism on academic freedom in New York State. Oscar Shaftel, one of the original faculty members at Queens College, was fired in 1953 under Section 903 of the New York City Charter for refusing to testify in front of the Senate Internal Security...
