Historical Note

The Armenian Genocide, also known as the Armenian Massacres, was the systematic killing and deportation of the Armenian people by the Ottoman government between the years 1915-1923. It is estimated that between 800,000 and 1.5 million people were killed in the area that largely is in present day Turkey. These events as well as the Jewish Holocaust led to Raphael Lemkin to coin the word “genocide” to describe the systematic killing of an ethnic group.

This collection primarily covers the push for having the Armenian Genocide officially recognized by the international community and Turkish – United States relations and tensions over this issue in the 2000s. It also focuses on commemoration events in the United States as well as publications and arts (movies, theatre) that relate to the Armenian Genocide.
