Scope and Contents

The collection consists of materials collected from cruise ships and vacations during the years 1948-1974. Materials include menus, tourism pamphlets, luggage name tags (eight attributing to Edward G. Clark Jr.), and other ephemeral materials. Many of the items were produced for first-class passengers.

Menus are written in various languages including English, French, Italian, and Portuguese, and contain information such as dates, the names of the ship and of the ship captain, and listings for meals. Ephemera, like invitations to cocktail events, coasters (cloth and wooden), and coin bags from casinos, are included.

Countries represented in this collection include America, Norway, Brazil, Trinidad, Barbados, Grenada, Russia, Italy, Croatia, Egypt, South Africa, Kenya, Greece, Israel, Rumania, Turkey, Portugal, Malta, Barcelona, Spain, Bermuda, St. Thomas, Hong Kong, Taiwan, and many more.

Biographical/Historical Note

This collection of cruise ship memorabilia is considered to be the personal collection of Edward Gladstone Clarke, Jr. Clarke was born in 1927 in Jersey City, New Jersey. According to his obituary, he enlisted in the U.S. Navy during World War II and served on the USS Alabama and USS Massachusetts. After leaving the military, he sailed as a merchant mariner, later earning a degree in Industrial Engineering at Columbia University in 1951. Clarke retired from a career in engineering in 1987 and died on October 12, 2011.
