Scope and Contents

Subject matter consists of prominent organizations and figures in the Civil Rights, Abolition, and Black Power Movements. Included are five posters issued by the Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee (SNCC), three postcards issued by the Southern Conference Educational Fund, two posters designed by the artist Charles Bible depicting Sojourner Truth and W.E.B. DuBois respectively, and individual posters issued by or in support of the NAACP, The Black Panther Party, The New York Committee to Free Angela Davis, and in protest of police killings at Jackson State College in Mississippi. Other posters in the series represent prominent figures in the movements including John Brown, Fredrick Douglas and Martin Luther King Jr. An Art print designed by Emily Waters in 2020 in response to the Covid-19 pandemic and Black Lives Matter Movement is also included.

From the Collection:

The majority of the materials are in English and Spanish, three posters are in French, and one poster is in Portuguese.
