Biographical / Historical
The Asian/American Center's Translation Program was created to facilitate communication to communities by translating crucial documents from English into Chinese, Korean, and Spanish. The program translated documents produced by government agencies, health-care institutions, youth service groups, senior centers, nonprofit community organizations, arts groups, and programs that promote interethnic, interracial, and intercultural exchange. Examples of translated documents include Know Your Rights materials, immigrant services manuals, museum guides, and flyers for community events. Translation services were free to community agencies that were committed to printing and distributing the translated material. Hong Wu served as Director of the Translation Program.

Processing Information
Due to the high volume of translation samples transferred to the archives, the archivist did not retain all translation documents. The archivist sampled materials by the following criteria: representing the variety of non-profit organizations and services they provided (health, community, arts, etc.) and the languages available for translation: Chinese, Korean and Spanish.
The value of these materials lies in their function, not the content of individual translations. Therefore, a sampling of the translations is sufficient to provide evidence of the range of organizations that requested translated documents from the A/AC Translation Program.
