Personal, 1959 - 2023, Undated

 Series — Multiple Containers

Scope and Contents

Records in the Personal series reflect aspects of Cohen’s personal life. Highlights include notes to his parents, letters received and written, and several handwritten journals.

  • Assorted Personal Ephemera includes programs from art exhibits, memo/to-do style notes/lists, a couple of photographs and a copy of Oxygen, which was signed and personalized to Cohen, but does not include his work.
  • Correspondence includes notes to Cohen's parents, a letter from Ronald Sabaroff mentioning the gay scene in Munich in 1970, and a letter to Joe, a possible critique partner of Cohen’s.
  • Journals includes some loose journal pages found scattered throughout the collection, as well as a collection of several journals handwritten on legal pads, covering the last few years of Cohen’s life, dated from 2016 until just a few weeks before his death in 2023 (two journals are undated). Two of the legal pad journals sustained mold damage and were digitized and removed from the collection to prevent damage to the rest of the materials. PDFs of these journals are available by request.
