Biographical Notes

Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, popularly known as AOC, catapulted to national attention when she ran and won in the Democratic Party’s primary election in 2018 against Joe Crowley, the powerful ten-term incumbent U.S. Representative for New York’s 14th Congressional District. Easily winning against the Republican candidate in the general election, she again made history as the youngest woman to serve in the United States Congress. She identifies as a democratic socialist and is widely seen as representing the progressive wing of the Democratic Party. Among many other media coverage, she is in the 2019 Time "100 Most Influential People" and her primary campaign was featured in the award-winning Netflix documentary, Knock Down The House.

Aaron Taube, who donated the materials, was a member of the organizing committee for the electoral working group of the New York City chapter of the Queens branch of the Democratic Socialists of America (DSA). His work included meeting with Ocasio-Cortez, performing research, organizing meetings where members could ask her questions and vote on whether to endorse her, and whipping votes at the DSA's citywide leadership committee to get the endorsement to pass. Taube was also an organizer of Queens DSA's field operation on behalf of Ocasio-Cortez. The chapter's team of 103 volunteers knocked on over 11,000 doors, representing 1/5 of the volunteer canvass for Ocasio-Cortez.

Historical Note

On June 26, 2018 Ocasio-Cortez pulled off an upset victory over ten-term incumbent Joseph Crowley in the Democratic primary for U.S. Representative for New York's 14th congressional district. She then went on to defeat Republican Anthony Pappas in the November 6th general election.
