Professional Photos, circa mid-1950s to early-2010s

 Sub-Series — Multiple Containers

Scope and Contents

The professional subseries of the photo series contains images of various sizes from the 1950s to mid-2010s that document the vast political activities that Marshall engaged in over the years. This subseries includes photos printed in both black and white and color, taken by professional photographers and amateurs, and saved along with correspondence, handwritten notes, and other types of metadata in some cases. Professional photos often include the date of the event, identities of the people therein, and photographer/copyright information. Marshall has left behind annotations on the back sides of many photos as well as on envelopes explaining the events or people portrayed.

In addition to photos chronicling Marshall's career as an elected official, this subseries also includes photos relating to Marshall's early work with the Langston Hughes Community Library and Cultural Center and the Frederick Douglass Democratic Association between the 1960s and 1980s. Some notable political figures captured in the photos of this subseries include Hillary Clinton, Joseph Crowley, Mario Cuomo, Nelson Mandela, Barack Obama, and many more. As distinct from the personal photos subseries, this collection shows Marshall at official government events such as New York State Assembly and New York City Council hearings and meetings, committee events, speeches, civil ceremonies, and many local Queens events like little league baseball games, grand openings, and anniversaries.

Arrangement

This subseries is arranged first by photo size, then by date when possible. Each category of photo size serves as a file designation, including oversized (photos larger than 8" x 10"), 8" x 10", 5" x 7", 4" x 6", small (photos smaller than 4" x 6"), and custom size (photos measuring any other dimensions than those listed in previous files). Within each file grouping, photos are arranged as chronologically as possible with respect to original order where context overrides size grouping.

Processing Information

In response to the large quanitity of photos in this subseries, items were preserved and arranged as quickly as possible to facilitate access. More preservation and arrangment work may be necessary in the future, such as further chronological reordering of photos, as well as removal of old plastic photo album coverings in Box 29.
