Caumsett

 File — Box: 12, Folder: 18-22

Scope and Contents

From the Series:

Photographs depict images of Queens College campus and grounds. As originally organized by Creative Services, photos are grouped by named buildings (mostly exterior shots but some interiors) or outside campus features. Some folders contain renderings of buildings both constructed and not realized, and several depict the construction process for various campus features and buildings. Other folders are organized by a unifying theme, like seasons.

While students may be in these photographs, because Creative Services grouped these by building or campus feature this series has retained those groupings and not been re-categorized into "student life" or "campus scenes".

Biographical / Historical

Caumsett State Park is the former site of the Marshall Field mansion and grounds, property of the American entrepreneur. In 1979, it was announced that Queens College would use the 56-room house and surrounding land as an environmental study center and teaching facility. It was an ideal location for environmental study because of its close proximity to seashore, salt marsh, fresh-water pond, upland meadows and woodland. Recently, it is also used as an experiential learning and education center for youths.
