Professional Material, bulk: 1980 - 1989

 Series — Multiple Containers
Identifier: I

Scope and Contents

This series of professional material, created and/or collected by Errera, is a look into the emerging energy futures market, especially as it was publicized and marketed by Errera at NYMEX and later through his own firm. Errera collected the material here over a period of decades, with the bulk of the documents dated to the 1980s. Industry conference and seminar ephemera, correspondence, and marketing and publicity items are prominent types of material in this series. Conference ephemera from events held in cities around the country--Boston, Houston, New York--show that Errera was an avid speaker, sharing the billing with influential energy analysts like Arnold E. Safer. These conferences were organized by a range of institutions with connections to the industry, including energy companies such as Exxon and Arthur Andersen & Co., professional societies in accounting, and business graduate schools. Errera also saved presentation materials, such as transparencies and drafts of lectures. Folder 2 is primarily correspondence, including with NYMEX president Richard C. Leone (1980-1982). Of relevance to Errera’s marketing role at NYMEX is a “Petroleum Futures Information Kit” (Box 2, Folder 2), an example of the type of information packet that he would provide to potential buyers or sellers. Of special interest is a copy of a January 31, 1978 memo from a petroleum trade group to the Department of Energy that describes the proposed (still under regulatory review) New York Harbor-based [heating oil] futures contract, which was the commodity that established the institution’s energy futures market, and argues for its positive role in the global energy industry. There are official NYMEX letters and announcements, many written by Errera. Also included in this series are slides, including those Errera developed for presentations and seminars, photographs of NYMEX, and a cassette tape of an Errera radio interview (Box 4).
