Constituent Files, Sensitive (6 folders), c. mid-1970s to mid-2010s
Scope and Contents
These files are comprised of handwritten and typed letters detailing sensitive personal issues from Marshall's constituents since her early career, roughly from the late 1970s to the mid-2010s. The correspondence includes complaints about domestic disputes, family court proceedings, ongoing and unresolved legal issues, clemency requests from incarcerated people and their families, requests for letters of reference or endorsement, and pleas for Marshall's help with other perceived civil injustices. While these files are mostly composed of mail received by Marshall, there are a few instances that capture Marshall's responses to her constituents as well as how she escalated certain cases to higher political or legal authorities when she deemed it appropriate.
