 Sub-Series — Multiple Containers

Scope and Contents

Materials in this subseries cover a wide range of subjects, dates, locations, and material formats related to Marshall's political career. To preserve original order, materials are arranged by date. These files contain an array of items such as press clippings, fliers, handwritten speech drafts, community organizing pamphlets, committee meeting agendas and minutes, project reports, and much more reflecting Marshall's diverse modes of civic engagement. Researchers may encounter overlap between this subseries of the Activity Files and the Arranged by Subject subseries.

Language of Materials

From the Collection:

Majority of the materials are written in English. A small quantity of correspondence is in Spanish and Korean. It is possible that there are other languages present throughout the correspondence, though it would be a very small percentage.

Conditions Governing Access

Appointments to examine materials must be made in advance. Please email QC.archives@qc.cuny.edu for more information or to schedule an appointment.

Extent

4.17 Linear Feet (4 full standard record cartons (15.5" long x 12.5" wide x 10.25" high))

Arrangement

Due to the lack of a coherent subject or format link among the materials in this subseries, folders were kept in their original order and labeled by general date ranges covered within. Folders were then arranged chronologically by earliest date in the labeled range. Box 8 covers dates from the early 1970s to the mid-1990s, while Box 9 includes files from the mid-1980s to the mid-2000s. Files in Box 10 are dated between the early 1990s to the early 2000s and Box 11 contains files from the late 1990s up to the mid-2010s. While this arrangement means that there is significant overlap between dates in each folder in this subseries, materials were not further separated by date in order to preserve any existing contextual links.

Processing Information

Since there was no apparent original order to this subseries, most instances of correspondence, photos, and campaign materials that were not clearly linked to surrounding records were removed and redistributed to other series respectively. The remaining materials were kept as-is in an effort to preserve any potential contextual links and to convey how this portion of Marshall's record-keeping style may have looked in its original state.
